Rondo

Rondo is a part of my Reverb Series, a body of large-scale monoprints that draws inspiration from the forest of symbols and the intriguing concept of synesthesia found in Baudelaire’s poem, “Correspondences”.

I named Rondo after a musical form in which the main theme is repeated.

I see music in each layer of the print:

  • in the woodblock print, which came from a drawing I made at a concert
  • in the loops of the calligraphic rubbing
  • and in the syncopation of the gold dots on top.

That music is reflected in the dance Rondo performs when I suspend it in a space.

Its lightweight paper rustles, crackles, and sways back and forth with the air currents of the space and movements of passersby.

Thus both the prints and viewers engage in a quiet call and response dance.

My hope is that taking a moment to play with art will spark a greater awareness in the participant’s surroundings—the sounds, the air currents, the smells, the colors, the light—which she or he will then carry beyond the exhibition space.
