Serenade
Serenade is part of my Reverb Series, a group of large-scale monoprints that draw inspiration from the forest of symbols and synesthetic concepts found in Baudelaire’s poem, “Correspondences”.
A serenade is a musical composition intended to be performed in the early evening. The title refers to the serene, waltz-like rhythm I see in the calligraphic text that loops over half of the print. This black tracery of text over a silvery ground further evokes a sense of tree branches silhouetted against a moonlit night, while the gold patterning on the reverse side speak to a sky aglow with sunset colors at the end of the day.
Serenade is the first of a duo of aluminum-gilded monoprints created from a single piece of writing, with the text continuing onto the second print, Nocturne. Serenade is associated with dusk, while Nocturne, a musical composition for late-night performances, represents full night.
When installed, Serenade reflects light and dances with surrounding air currents, inviting viewers to engage with the piece. My hope is that is that this interaction will spark a heightened awareness of the sights, sounds, and sensations that surround the viewer, which they will then carry beyond the exhibition space.
