Les Fleurs de Givre
Les Fleurs de Givre is part of my Parlour Games Series, which explores the cultural boundaries of what is considered appropriate to display in our residences, using unusual motifs, colors, and varying degrees of chaos in design.
The silvery background in this piece, the lacy patterns of the overlapping lichens and mold spores, and the icy palette of greens and blues mixed with warm oranges make me think of ice flowers (the translation of the title) on a window catching the sun’s rays at sunrise.
I believe it is important to include the untamed spirit of nature in our everyday living spaces. The lichens showcased in this artwork mirror the limited palette, repetition of shapes, and ornate materials of decorative abstract artworks we typically display in our homes. However the lichens and mold spores that serve as the motif for this piece are often disregarded, undervalued, and trampled upon. Les Fleurs de Givre serves as a reminder to observe and embrace the beauty found in all aspects of nature – the modest, the wild, and the awe-inspiring.
