La Giboulée

La Giboulée is part of my Parlour Games Series, which examines cultural limitations in what is deemed suitable for domestic display, utilizing motifs, colors, and varying levels of chaos in design.

A giboulée, a term borrowed from the French language, refers to a sudden and intense downpour. Also known as April Showers, this phenomenon is often accompanied by strong winds and can include a mix of hail, snowflakes, ice pellets, or sleet alongside the rain.

I chose this title because the combination of drips and snowflake-like lichens in this piece are reminiscent of this mixed rain. Additionally, its vibrant spring palette evokes the sense of the warmth slowly breaking through winter’s chill. These storms signify the end of winter, the beginning of a period of growth, and a sense of instability in nature.

My objective is to bring that wildness into our everyday spaces. Most of the natural elements we encounter in our homes are carefully cultivated, representing nature controlled by human hands. The lichens that make up this piece are as colorful, lacy, and delicate as garden flowers. However, lichens are often overlooked, undervalued and trampled. La Giboulée reminds us to recognize and appreciate the beauty in all aspects of nature – the modest, the untamed, and the divine.
