Monotypes

An éclaircie is a break in the clouds, a momentary clearing of the sky where the sun pours through…

Size: 20” h x 15” w x 2” d

I named La Tempête, which translates to “tempest” in French, after a storm as tempestuous as the image.  I hear clashing in this artwork’s discordant colors, a thunderous rumble in the scoring and searing of its surface, and I feel electricity in the shimmer of the gilded surfaces.

Media:  Pyrography, silkscreen, relief print, collage, painting, and drawing on copper and aluminum-gilded mulberry papers on panel

Size: 20” h x 26” w x 2” d

Named after the French word for hail, La Grêle’s woodburned, painted, and silkscreened lichens remind me of ice crystals illuminated by sunlight and reflecting surrounding colors post-hailstorm…

Size: 14 7/8” h x 23 7/16” w x 2” d

The electrification of clouds, which is the translation of L’Électrisation du Nuage, refers to the collision of water droplets and ice crystals in the formation of thunderstorm clouds…

Les Amas Nuageux means heap of clouds in French. The puffy cloud shapes of the lichens and drawings in this piece make me think of cumulus clouds multiplying in the sky before a storm on a hot summer day…

A giboulée, a term borrowed from the French language, refers to a sudden and intense downpour. I chose this title because the combination of drips and snowflake-like lichens in this piece are reminiscent of this mixed rain…

Media: Pyrography, collage, silkscreen, and relief print on copper-gilded mulberry paper on panel

Size: 16 5/8” h x 19 5/8” w x 2” d

I chose this title, which means after the storm, because the shape of the fungi as well as the palette evoke images of fluffy cumulonimbus clouds bathed in sunset hues following a brief, intense storm…

Size: 19 3/4” h x 19 5/8” w x 2” d

I chose the title L’Averse, meaning downpour, for this piece because the shape of its fungi, its drips, and its silver background evoke the image of a sudden cloudburst…

Size: 21 1/4” h x 14 3/4” w x 2” d

A pyrocumulus cloud is a dense cumuliform cloud associated with fire or volcanic eruptions. I chose this title because the arrangement of the lichens in this piece calls to mind the tornado-like towers of forest fire smoke I see every year in the Rocky Mountains…

Media: Silkscreen and wax grattage on aluminum-gilded mulberry paper on panel

Size: 25 3/4″ h x 15″ w x 2″ d

The silvery background in this piece, the lacy patterns of the overlapping lichens and mold spores, and the icy palette of greens and blues mixed with warm oranges make me think of ice flowers (the translation of the title) on a window catching the sun’s rays at sunrise…
